Program: There is a significant increase in the amount of geophysics being used by Federal, state and industry geologists and engineers on construction and critical structure projects. This fact was borne out of an NCHRP survey I conducted in 2005-2006 to FHWA, every state DOT, and 8 Canadian Provinces (NCHRP Synthesis #357: Sirles, 2006). The increase use is directly attributed to the value that geophysics adds to subsurface exploration and the characterization of complex geologic conditions.
The presentation will be a technical discussion of the most commonly used methods and their applications. However, the focus will not be on the technique or its theory, but rather on the most recent developments in the geophysical industry that are not yet well known (e.g., 3D seismic modeling, 3D electrical imaging, etc.). Most geotechnical engineers are aware of one geophysical method, or maybe two, but ‘geophysics’ represents a ‘tool-box’ of methods – knowing which tool to use is the most important piece of the puzzle. We will utilize your lunch hour to provide a peek into the state-of-the-art tool box for geophysical investigation methods as applied to geological and geotechnical engineering.
