YMG Reaches Out to Mizzou

Four of us Younger Members drove down to Columbia, MO to give a presentation to the ASCE student chapter at Mizzou.  We each talked about what we do at our respective companies, and then we talked about what we do with the YMG.  We also explained the benefits of ASCE membership after graduating from college. They were great hosts, and we hope to return to campus again soon.

A Panel of Professionals @ UMKC

The YMG hosted Adrian Keller, Lori Gies, Mike Winckler, Jeff Bartz & Terry Uhl as a panel for the discussion with the ASCE UMKC Student Chapter. During this hour long discussion about expectations during the career fair, transition from students to professionals, graduate school and our panelists’ careers, we had great engagement of the students with our professionals. The KC ASCE YMG appreciates the opportunity to participate with the UMKC student chapter in this annual event. We look forward to engaging with students, and good luck to them at the career fair next week!

Raytown High School STEM in the GYM

Last Thursday, November 12th, our School Outreach Chairs organized 8 volunteers to participate at the annual STEM in the GYM in Raytown High School in Missouri. During the event, KC ASCE had over 150 students engaged through the four tables of activities. One table included KC ASCE’s bridge display, another had information about civil engineering, and two tables were dedicated to our shake table activity building towers out of starbursts. We look forward to a busy January and February with many outreach events!

Olathe Middle School Science Night

ASCE had a classroom full of activities to demonstrate civil engineering to middle school students. We showcased everything that Civil Engineering has to offer including our bridge activity (large cable stayed bridge), starburst shake table (tooth pick structure creation), a geotechnical activity (geotech sand box and powerpoint), and a water/environmental activity (ice cream environmental remediation).  We also had an awesome volunteer turnout for the event at Santa Fe Trail Middle School in Olathe.
