Spring YMG Highway Cleanup

May Highway Cleanup

The Kansas City Area ASCE YMG held their bi-annual highway clean up event on May 14th, 2016 from 9am-12pm. Members picked up trash on a 0.5 mile stretch of I-435 that is sponsored by ASCE. The group was able to collect more than 36 bags of trash in 2 hours of work! Keep an eye out for the next highway cleanup in the fall!

ASB Bridge Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

The Kansas City Section culminated a decade-long project in dedicating the ASB Bridge and cutting the ribbon on the counterweight memorial site. The counterweights display fascinating engineering information as well as the plaque commemorating the bridge as an ASCE National Historic Landmark. Many families and ASCE members were in attendance on a beautiful morning where the YMG set up a demonstration bridge, a historic speaker told stories, and the project was glorified by many speakers. The keynote was given by the ASCE President-Elect Dr. Norma Jean Mattei. Food was served, and Kansas City engineering was a spectacle for a few solid hours.

Volunteering for Unified Soccer League of Kansas

The Kansas City Younger Member Group volunteered for the third straight year with the Unified Soccer League of Kansas. Special Olympics empowers individuals with intellectual disabilities to become physically fit, productive, and respected members of society. This event was held at Harmon High School in Kansas City, KS. ASCE KC YMG provided 20 volunteers to participate as referees and scorekeepers for over 30 games played by Special Olympic Athletes and their partners. Teams ranged from middle school to high school ages. The KC YMG provided lunch drinks and lunch for all the volunteers and Special Olympics of Kansas donated t-shirts to all the volunteers for their participation. We will be looking forward to 2017!

Harvesters Packing Day

On a windy Saturday afternoon mid-March, over 18 younger members headed to Harvester’s Community Network to volunteer their time to help those in need. Once again, Kansas City ASCE continues to partner with this organization to give back to our community. Harvesters provides food for 26 counties in the northern Missouri and Kansas regions.

This time around the KC YMG was assigned to sort through five different types of breads in the warehouse. We had some of our members boxing up cardboard boxes, with others sorting through the bread items, labelling them and finally moving them into pallets.

After we had volunteered for about two hours, those in attendance headed to Tomfooleries in the Plaza to hang out, and get some food and drinks!

Thank you to our committee chairs Andrew Robertson and Lee Ryherd for putting this together!

27th Annual Block Kids Building Competition

The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) hosted the 27th Annual Block Kids Building Competition. The YMG volunteered to be a judge, a.k.a. “Building Inspector”, where we talked to children about their project and the world of construction. The materials for the competition include legos, construction paper, string, and aluminum foil and the children, from 1st to 6th grades, create a commercial building.
