STOP Midwest Corrosion Hosts the 2nd Annual Corrosion Expo!

STOP Midwest Corrosion hosted the 2nd Annual Corrosion Expo at the Kansas City Builder’s Association. The event served several sectors of the engineering and tradecraft industry, bringing together professionals and craft workers together in a forum to discuss the latest in corrosion (certifications, best practices, and products). The most notable facet of the exposition was the setting. Attendees were able to pour over the actual test setups, materials, and equipment used for example applications. Some were even working on their certifications during the demonstrations. There was a class worth 1PDH held twice, back-to-back, over the lunch hour. This added convenience for professionals to stop by during lunch. Door prizes were awarded, and one of our YMG members won a 32” TV!

February Meeting at FUEL Bar & Grill in OP

There were over 20 YMG members who got together at FUEL for some drinks this week. It had been a while since the last monthly meeting in December, so there were a lot of topics to discuss, and all were updated. Each board member of the YMG shared some of their upcoming events, and there were around four new faces in the crowd.

A Panel of Professionals @ UMKC

The YMG hosted Adrian Keller, Lori Gies, Mike Winckler, Jeff Bartz & Terry Uhl as a panel for the discussion with the ASCE UMKC Student Chapter. During this hour long discussion about expectations during the career fair, transition from students to professionals, graduate school and our panelists’ careers, we had great engagement of the students with our professionals. The KC ASCE YMG appreciates the opportunity to participate with the UMKC student chapter in this annual event. We look forward to engaging with students, and good luck to them at the career fair next week!

27th Annual Block Kids Building Competition

The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) hosted the 27th Annual Block Kids Building Competition. The YMG volunteered to be a judge, a.k.a. “Building Inspector”, where we talked to children about their project and the world of construction. The materials for the competition include legos, construction paper, string, and aluminum foil and the children, from 1st to 6th grades, create a commercial building.

Kansas City Officers at CRYMC!

Four Kansas City Younger Member Officers attended the Central Region Younger Member Council in Chicago on January 15th-16th 2016. During this annual leadership conference, all section and branch leaders of ASCE from Regions 3, 6 and 7 gather together. Our officers were able to exchange successful practices with other younger member group officers and gain new perspectives on activities that will benefit our KC group. This Younger Member Council in Chicago was a resounding success as two of our younger members were recognized for their dedication to ASCE and the profession: Stephen Stinger was recognized as an Outstanding Young Civil Engineer in the Private Sector, and Mike Winckler was recognized as an Outstanding Young Civil Engineer in the Public Sector.

We are very excited to have them as part of our vibrant younger member group! We are looking forward to participating in the next Younger Member Council next February 3rd-4th, 2017 in Minneapolis. This is a great networking opportunity within our profession, and the KC YMG appreciates the full support of the KC Section. Please let Ozzy Bravo (obravo@terracon.com) know if you would be interested in attending next year.
