Design-Build Transportation Project: A Geotechnical Perspective


On November 20th, Deepak Neupane and Ozzy Bravo from Terracon gave a presentation from a geotechnical perspective on a design-build project in Texas. The presentation gave an outline of the project and the hurdles that the project team overcame. 16 people attended this event.

November Meeting and Harvester’s Food Drive


The Kansas City Area ASCE YMG held their annual Harvesters food drive on November 19th at The Grandfalloon. Attendees of November meeting who brought 5 non-perishable food items or a $5 cash donation received a free entrée. A representative from Harvesters was present to give a brief presentation about how the donated items will be used.

63 lbs of food and $52 were donated providing 208 meals!

Johnson County Gateway Project Presentation


On October 28th, Burt Morey (KDOT) and Joe Brand (HNTB) gave a presentation on the Johnson County Gateway Project to 31 attendees. The presentation discused the different phases of the project and the decision process behind the selection of the winning design-build team.

STEM in the GYM

STEM in the GYM at Raytown high school in Missouri, thru KC STEM ALLIANCE, volunteers showed around 200 grade school and high school students how to create various toothpick (beam) and starburst (joint) structures and test those structures strengths by adding loads to the structure roofs and placing the structures on seismic shake tables. Students were taught the importance of adding cross bracing and using triangular design shapes.


Sticky: Monthly Meeting Information

ASCE YMG meets monthly (usually on the third Tuesday of the month at 6 PM) for happy hour at local Kansas City establishments. These meetings are a great chance to learn more about YMG and network with fellow engineers in the Kansas City metro.

Come Join us at Tanner’s (10146 W 119th St. Overland Park, KS) for our December monthly happy-hour and Toys-for-Tots toy drive. Complimentary appitizers and/or drinks will be provided to those who bring toys to donate. Check out the Toys-for-Tots website for donation ideas.
